Wakulla Head Coach Scott Klees is proud of his War Eagles after their 30-6 win against the Blountstown Tigers last week, and their 4-0 start.

“I’m just so proud,” Klees said. “Interesting that we’re 4-0 at this point – not too many people had us picked to be undefeated right now.”

The War Eagles dominated a very good Blountstown team – a team that was bigger than Wakulla and featured a 6’4” 250-pound FSU commit at tight end.

But the War Eagle defense played stout and only faced a couple of threats during the game. The one score that Blountstown got was with 2 minutes left in the game and the young guys playing.

And the offense dominated: when the Tigers would try to take away one playmaker, another player would step up.

Running back Xavier Blake was keyed on but still had 10 carries for 82 yards and two catches for 25 yards.

Receiver Samron Brinson was double-covered most of the night, but still managed 8 catches for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns, including one score late in the game on a scramble drill as QB Haden Klees was moving around in the backfield and saw Brinson running down the sideline.

Gabe Carter had 3 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Jeremiah Thomas had 2 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.

QB Klees went 13 for 18 passing with 305 yards and 4 TDs.

On defense, Antonio Eaglton had 10 tackles; Cody Walker had 8 tackles; and Amonta Harris had 2 tackles and an interception; and Jeremiah Thomas had 11 tackles.

GAME RECAP

The War Eagles kicked off to the Tigers, but they couldn’t sustain a drive and punted to Wakulla.

On their possession, the War Eagles scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from QB Haden Klees to receiver Gabe Carter. Chase Linville kicks the extra point. Wakulla up 7-0 with 6:24 left in 1Q.

Another stop y Wakulla defense. Tigers punt. War Eagle ball at their own 40. Xavier Blake breaks a 25-yard run to the Blountstown 35. Drive stalled, and a 32-yard field goal by Linville puts Wakulla up 10-0 with 2 minutes left in the 1Q.

Blountstown punt to start 2Q. On offense Klees connects with receiver Samron Brinson for 10 and a facemask penalty puts the ball at the 25. Facing a 4th and 11 at the 27, Klees connects with Brinson for TD. Blountstown offsides on PAT, Wakulla goes for 2 but Blake dropped in backfield. It’s 16-0 Wakulla leads Blountstown with 9:49 left in 2Q.

Blountstown punt bobbled by Brinson but he recovers. Penalty puts ball at 45. Run by Blake and a pass to Carter and War Eagles are inside the 20. Blake to 8. It’s 3rd and 1 for Wakulla. Then Klees is sacked back at the 17.

Linville misses a 26-yard field goal (can’t tell if a Tiger got a hand on it to block it).

Blountstown threatened on its next drive, penetrating as deep as the 10, but War Eagle defense stops them on a 4th down play.

Halftime: Wakulla 16, Blountstown 0

War Eagles take kickoff to start second half. Run by Blake for 1st down. Pass to Carter and another to Jeremiah Thomas. Then Brinson down the sideline for a TD. Extra point good. Wakulla up 23-0.

Blountstown punts but it’s muffed by Thomas and recovered by the Tigers at the Wakulla 39. Amonta Harris interception at goal line for Wakulla, returned to 25. Then screen to Thomas, he weaves through defenders, turns on the speed and takes it to the house. Extra point good. War Eagles up 30-0 over Blountstown as 3rd quarter ends.

Young players get some playing time: another Klees, Owen, is in at quarterback. With Wakulla on defense, with Wakulla second string and 2 minutes on the clock, Blountstown scores a touchdown. The extra point is no good. Score is 30-6.

Final: Wakulla 30, Blountstown 6

NEXT UP: MOSLEY

“Mosley will be a different kind of game for us – they are gigantic, they’re huge,” said Klees.

And the team includes an FSU commit who plays the slot, wildcat and QB.

“He’s a special talent.”

Behind that big line, the War Eagles have their work cut out.

“It’s gonna be a good physical test,” Klees said. He said his War Eagles will have to match that physicality up front. “If we’re getting blown off the ball on offense and defense, it’s gonna be a long night.”
