This past Saturday afternoon a large portion of Wakulla County attended the Wakulla Dance Academy’s annual recital at Chiles High School. Among all the other celebrations at this time of year, this event is one of my favorites. Of course that has nothing to do with the fact that my granddaughter is a participant!
It is so exciting to watch these children work, learn and grow from year to year. This year, two dancers are graduating, after a lifetime of dance. Their performances were amazing and beautiful. The participants ranged from pre-school age to high school graduates, which provides a real perspective on the journey dancers traverse from beginners to virtuosos.
We finally received decent rain here in Wakulla, really for the first time in months. Literally overnight, my flower gardens have burst into life. Though the weeds prospered more than my flowers, they really exploded into a frenzy of growth after the rain. Grass changed from crispy to green, and I even briefly had puddles! Yes, it has been hot and humid, but I’m very glad for the rain.
The pond is starting to fill again, which is making the frog chorus very happy. It’s fun to wander out after dusk and just listen to the cacophony. You might be surprised at just how loud the amphibious choir can be. Sometimes I get lucky and get to watch the bats dip and dive as they chase insects across the sky, and when it gets really dark, I can watch the fireflies flicker on and off.
Every now and then, the game cameras catch a random cat, fox or raccoon rambling across the property looking for tasty treats. You just never know what will show up from one night to the next. They definitely make short work of our peaches, citrus and berries when they’re in season. What the cats are looking for is anyone’s guess, except perhaps a short-cut from point A to point B.
Next Sunday, the Wakulla United Methodist Church will host a potluck dinner following the service, and all are welcome to join. They will host a Church garage sale on Saturday, June 13th to help raise funds to support the food pantry, and there will be lots of “cool stuff” there.
The Woodville UMC will have its Second Sunday Sing on Sunday, June 14th, at 6 p.m., with a fellowship supper at 7. Everyone is invited to join in for a great time.
