County commission votes 3-2 to freeze fees for youth sports

The Wakulla County commission voted 3-2 not to increase fees for players at the Medart Recreation Park.
The proposal to increase fees for kids playing sports by $5 drew outrage from representatives of a couple of youth associations, saying the increased costs posed a threat to the existence of their organizations.

Major Dale Evans was subject of investigation in โ€˜24

Never criminally charged, but the case seems to have set off series of complaints about agency

A year ago, in August 2024, Major Dale Evans became the subject of a criminal investigation after another deputy received a text from a burner phone alerting her that she was being investigated and was going to be fired.
The deputy who received the text, not knowing who it was from, went to the departmentโ€™s internal affairs department to report it. A criminal investigation was opened the next day.

Woman sentenced to 17 years in prison for selling meth

A woman who allegedly sold methamphetamine to a confidential informant for the Wakulla County Sheriffโ€™s Office between April and August 2024 was sentenced to 17 years in state prison.
Angel Palmer made an open plea to two cases of possession of meth within 1,000 feet of a church, a second-degree felony, and use of a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony, a third degree felony.

County commission holds budget workshop

County commissioners went through the exercise of what a 10% cut to the county budget would look like at a workshop last week.
County commissioner Valerie Russell requested the board look at the cuts to county departments โ€“ excluding the sheriffโ€™s office and public safety.
County staff presented the information at a budget workshop on Monday, Aug. 18.

TALLAHASSEE โ€“ Florida leaders made a show this week of bringing back from California an immigrant involved in a deadly traffic crash and removing locally approved artwork โ€” including gay pride rainbow colors โ€” from crosswalks.
But Gov. Ron DeSantisโ€™ administration found itself late Thursday rushing to appeal a federal judgeโ€™s ruling that targeted the controversial immigrant-detention center in the Everglades dubbed โ€œAlligator Alcatraz.โ€

The Wakulla War Eagles started the season with a win over the Leon Lions on Thursday night, a 37-20 win on the road at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee;
โ€œIโ€™m very excited with the win,โ€ said Head Coach Scott Klees. โ€œA lot of young players started for the first time: on offense, there were seven new starters; and on defense, seven new starters.โ€
