BIRDING AT THE REFUGE

Has the flamingo headed home?

By DON MORROW

The American Flamingo that has been a visitor at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is not currently being seen. The last eBird report on this bird was from Feb. 22nd, when it was seen on Lighthouse Pool at the refuge.
It was first sighted on Oct. 31, 2018 following Hurricane Michael, and has been present on the refuge for four periods (see below). The gaps between these sightings have been as long as six months and as short as two months.
From October 2018 to  June 2019.
From  December 2019 to June 2020.
From October 2020 to March 2022.
And from May 2022 to  February 2023.
Has this bird finally decided to head home or has it just wandered off for Spring Break?
