This past weekend, Flotilla 12 held our monthly business meeting. Following the meeting, member Phil Hill provided training on proper photography for the auxiliary. Thank you to Norma Hill for the picture.
As mentioned last week, the Coast Guard released the 2023 Recreational Boating Statistics report. According to the report overall boating fatalities fell a whopping 11.3 percent, from 636 in 2022 to 564 last year. The news was good almost across the board, with incidents down 4.9 percent and non-fatal injuries decreasing 4.3 percent.
Not following this trend was paddling fatalities, which increased yet again in 2023 to nearly one in three (32.5 percent) recreational boating deaths in the United States, up from 27.4 percent in 2022.
The Coast Guard reminds us that while nationally boating fatalities are decreasing, they are increasing in the paddle sports segment. If not for yourself, for your loved ones. Paddle smart, paddle safe and have fun. Life jackets save lives.
