Historical Society program on Wakulla coaches set
Special to The Sun
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Wakulla County Historical Society and Wakulla High School will present a special program featuring Coaches of Wakulla County Schools.
This event will be held at the Wakulla High School gymnasium beginning at 5p.m. iwith a reunion of all past and present coaches.
At 6 p.m., there will be a panel discussion in the auditorium, moderated by former baseball head coach and superintendent of schools David Miller, and will feature J.D. Jones, Randy Anderson, Diane Eakin, Frances Knight and others.
Credit for the theme of this program goes to Brent Thurmond, President of the Historical Society.
Brent said, “The idea for this program first came to me when visiting the home of the late Coach Matt Mathis as his family was getting ready to sell the place. It just dawned on me how big of a role somebody like him played in high school sports in Wakulla County’s history, and how that was deserving of some recognition by the Historical Society.
“This quickly grew into a larger scope event as I considered the large number of important figures and transitioning from one room school house system with some free playtime to a central high school that has had several state championships in different sports.
“On a side note, because of the planned demolition of the entire front part of Wakulla High School, including the lunchroom, office, gymnasium and auditorium, we thought it would be a good spot to hold our monthly meeting for the Historical Society.”
The public is encouraged to attend both the reunion and the panel discussion. For more information, please call (850) 926-1110..
