Follow-up questions on the animal shelter

Editor, The Sun:

Good morning, Sun!
Thank you for your coverage of the Animal Shelter. I sent this email today to BOCC:

Dear Commissioners:

As I said at the September 3rd BOCC meeting, I have lived in Wakulla for 26 years. I volunteered at the Shelter for over a year, until the killing started last month. I have 2 rescued dogs.
What I did not hear from you at that meeting was a concern for saving lives, or any sense of urgency. Lives are being lost! 100+ deaths in 2024; that is APPALLING!!!
Questions for you:

  • What has been done for the Shelter since the last BOCC meeting?
  • Like the Shelter, how many county departments have to hold bake sales to meet their budget?
  • What happens to the $35K that you approved in February if it’s not spent by the end of this month (end of FY)?
  • When will the killing stop?
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
    Sincerely,

Karen Share

Money for shelter doesn’t meet needs

Editor, The Sun:

Thanks for reporting on the commission meeting and the animal shelter issue. I appreciate Commissioner Thomas noting that the shelter already gets more money than three other departments. I can’t confirm whether this is true, but even if it is, this money clearly is not addressing the need that so obviously exists. Therefore, we still have a problem. What’s the solution? Maybe look at how the money is allocated within the department; that’s only fair. Maybe – oh, I don’t know – raise taxes? You know, one good thing about being a Democrat is that we recognize that services cost money. Some of us are willing to pay more so that lives don’t continue to be lost.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Why wasn’t Ralph Thomas charged?

Editor, The Sun:

Why wasn’t Ralph Thomas charged with a felony in the Mike Kemp criminal conspiracy? He did the same thing that Deputy Newsome did: he went on a computer and got the name and info and gave it to Kemp. Newsome was charged with a felony. Thomas needs to be charged and arrested for aiding and being an accessory in this conspiracy. He helped Kemp just like the other two did.
He needs to be charged and put in jail like the others.

Editor’s Note: We aren’t law enforcement or the prosecutor, but several people contacted us to complain that Thomas wasn’t charged. But the investigation didn’t show he committed a crime: he didn’t log in to the sheriff’s system and look up cases without authorization, as Deputy Newsome is charged with. Thomas provided Kemp with voter information off WebElect, an app for Republican candidates that he presumably has a subscription for. He also warned Kemp when he gave him the information that Kemp might have the wrong person.

More people should have attended service

Editor, The Sun:

Very disappointed in the attendance at the 9/11 Memorial Service at the Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, September 11th. NEVER FORGET!
