This week, we celebrated Veterans Day, an opportunity to honor active and former U.S. service members. It is celebrated annually on Nov. 11th, the anniversary of the end of World War I. The armistice took effect at 11 a.m. on that day — “the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.”
Veterans Day always lands on Nov. 11, regardless of what day of the week it is.
Many members of flotilla 12 are veterans themselves, and have chosen to continue service as a volunteer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Members also continue to support veteran’s through our community engagement. This past weekend members assisted with registration for the Memorial to Memorial 5K, hosted by Fleet Feet in Tallahassee in conjunction with the Tallahassee Veterans Day celebrations. Bob Asztalos, Linda Olson and Wade Olson staffed the registration booth on Saturday, Nov. 10th. Other members supported participants as they completed their race that began at the Florida Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial and finished at Tallahassee’s Korean War Memorial in Cascades Park.
From all of us to all the veterans: Aim High … Fly-Fight-Win, Semper Paratus, Semper Fidelis, Undetermined, Never Quit and Semper Supra.
As Sherrie says, safe boating is no accident!
