SPECIAL TO THE SUN
The first annual West Florida Paddle Sports Swap and Shop event was held Saturday, Aug. 19 at Magnuson Wildwood Inn.
As part of the event, a giant print of the new Sopchoppy Hub Trail Map was unveiled. This is the premiere public presentation of a fine art piece, revealing Sopchoppy’s hub position among all the miles and miles of paddling, hiking, and cycling trails in South Wakulla County -- a region comprised primarily of National Forest (74%) and State Parks!
Nothing like this compilation existed until the Friends of the Sopchoppy River, with the cartographers, plus Magnuson’s Wildwood Inn, and others, developed this deeply layered guide for the community’s convenience. Sixteen copies will be mounted at trail heads around the region, showing visitors where the parking, put-ins, and trail routes are – and where they can have the most fun, whether hiking, on bicycles or paddling! The map shows trail heads and names, and locations, coordinates, distances, and significant land features!
The event also featured pool demonstrations with Tony Harts’ Kayak Fishing Seminar followed by the Florida Paddling Association’s demos on safety and tricky maneuvers!
Amanda Lee offered her Ochlockonee, Sopchoppy, and Crooked River excursion videos and talk, featuring a free raffle of gifts from AKASO.
