The Wakulla War Eagles Varsity baseball team moved to 8-2-1 this past week with a walkoff loss in the 7th inning to Madison County 4-3 and a tie at 2-2 in the 10th inning due to darkness with North Florida Christian.
On Monday, March 18, the War Eagles traveled to Madison. Will Chipman was the starting pitcher throwing 4.1 strong innings scattering 4 hits and 4 strikeouts giving up 2 runs. Jesse Nazworth came on in relief throwing 2.1 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 runs.
The War Eagles had lots of runners aboard, but had trouble pushing them across. Parker Lawhon, Sam Bruce, Brady Crum, Josiah Pierini, and Owen Klees all had hits. Brady Crum also had an RBI. The War Eagles trailed 3-1 until the top of the 7th. Josiah Pierini hit a 400 foot, two-run homerun to straight away centerfield to tie the game up. Madison County did their part in the 7th, with a double and eventually scoring the winning run with one out on a single to left field.
On Tuesday, March 19, the War Eagles traveled to NFC in what turned out to be a brilliant pitcher’s duel. The War Eagles struck in the top of the first with a Haden Klees single to score Parker Lawhon. NFC pushed a run across in the bottom of the first to tie the game, then in the second hit a solo run to go ahead 2-1. In the top of the fourth after a 7-pitch at bat, Garrett Veltkamp singled to score Owen Klees with 2 outs to tie the game up at 2. The game went 10 innings before it was called due to darkness. Leaston Spears started on the mound for Wakulla throwing 5.2 innings giving up 6 hits and 1 earned run. It was a quality start for the senior. Gavin Estep took over in the fifth inning throwing 4.1 innings, giving up only 1 hit and no runs.
