The Wakulla High Varsity War Eagles baseball team split two games this past week to improve to 12-3-1 on the year.
On Tuesday, April 2, they traveled to Liberty County to win a close one 5-3.
Will Chipman took to the mound for Wakulla throwing 4.2 innings scattering 7 hits and giving up 3 runs. Jesse Nazworth came in fourth down 2-1 to squelch a rally by the bulldogs, then finished the game giving up no hits and striking out 1.
Shortstop Haden Klees had a big night at the plate going 2-3 with a double and a 2 run homerun to break the tie at three to go ahead 5-3 in the 6th inning. Michael Hurley also had a two hit night.
Parker Lawhon, Owen Klees, and Josiah Pierini each had a hit also.
The War Eagles then traveled Thursday April 4th to district rival Suwannee. After the War Eagles made a comeback from a 3-0 deficit to go ahead 4-3, the Bulldogs would not be denied swinging well and taking an 8-4 lead in the 5th. The War Eagles mounted a rally with a towering shot off the top of the wall by Josiah Pierini to score two runs to cut the score to 8-7 in the sixth, but the bulldogs held on for the win in the last frame.
Leaston Spears started on the mound throwing 3 innings. Hayden Wright, Jesse Nazworth, Owen Klees, and Gavin Estep all threw in relief to keep the game close.
The War Eagles racked up 9 hits, out hitting the bulldogs, but couldn’t push a few runners across to seal the win.
Josiah Pierini had a huge night at the plate going 3-4 with a solo homerun and was less than an inch from notching a grand slam in the 5th inning. He had 4 RBIs on the evening.
Haden Klees and Brady Crum each had multiple hit games with both having a double a piece. Michael Hurley and Owen Klees also each had a single in the affair.
