Beautiful day in Sopchoppy! The weather has been amazing! I love it!
Well, I went to the Sopchoppy City Meeting and I wanted to give y’all some updates. It was on Monday, Feb. 10th at 6:30 – the same day as my brother’s birthday and scheduled at the same time as his family get together… But I had to go to see if the school property would be on the agenda.
All commissioners voted to accept the historic property. The first step is complete. Now we got to stay involved to make sure they are going to protect it. They are looking into putting a water well on the property. They need three acres to do this. The nature trail was discussed but I don’t think it is big enough. I would really rather it be on the backside of the school where those other tanks or whatever are. I mean the nature trail is beautiful, it just needs some love. Why cut down all those beautiful flowers for an eye sore when we have plenty of cleared property behind the school.
They also discussed the middle of the property because they need 3 acres for the entire project I think. That makes more sense to me. But one step at a time.
At least we are going to accept the property from the school board. We just have to stay involved so we can make sure all decisions are done right.
The owner of the Mason building in downtown came to the meeting to request his investment property be changed to residential or residential/commercial. He wants to sell the property and wants that changed. The city has to look into this request further and could not make that decision then.
The Health Department wants to put exercise equipment in a park in Sopchoppy. Five pieces of equipment in one location called a cage pod. No cost to the city. The city had questions about maintenance and concerns about location. No decision was made on that either.
They also heard from different people asking for sponsorship donations to sports. They agreed to give WMS baseball, WHS softball and the Rec park (softball I think) $250 each.
Discover Sopchoppy also spoke about making the monthly market a little more simple with just paying the city directly. Maybe an honor system or having a vendor in charge of collecting payment. Another suggestion was a yearly vendor fee application. This event would continue to be on every second Saturday.
Discover Sopchoppy also discussed they will have two big events a year. The Worm Grunting Festival and Christmas in Sopchoppy.
There was also discussion about a waterline being done at Wildwood. This may be a summer project.
OK, OK, OK – enough of the business…. It’s time to go fishing. The weather is absolutely beautiful. It’s also a good time to walk the beach or go fishing in the bay.
The Sopchoppy BakeHouse and Coffee company will be opening soon. They are located downtown next to Civic Brewery. They are going to have all kinds of amazing baked goods. They will also offer salads, sandwiches and soups occasionally.
One really cool thing about the BakeHouse is it is located in a historic building. That building was the original bank in Sopchoppy. Notice it sits across from the train depot. Back in the day the railroad was the way many people made a living.
The BakeHouse had the original bank safe in the building. The owners plan on putting the safe on display. I love to see our history restored. Visit the Sopchoppy BakeHouse and Coffee company for some good food and take a walk through Sopchoppy history.
Thursday February 13th I was honored to DJ the Special Olympics again this year! The Special Olympics touch my heart! I’m so glad I get to be a part of this. Due to weather it had to be moved to the gym but this event is truly amazing! Thank you to everyone who helps make this happen. I got presented with several cards from the kids. This event makes me proud to be from Wakulla!
Friday Valentine’s Day at 9 a.m. was the food drive at the Historic Sopchoppy School. Thank You Second Harvest, Sopchoppy Congregational Holiness Church and ALL the volunteers. This really helps our Community!
What a beautiful blessed week in Sopchoppy!
