Lessons in daily grace

By CHERYL CRUCE

It was during the years when my children were attending a small Christian school. Like most families, Monday mornings seemed to arrive sooner than expected. With three children to dress, lunches to prepare, and school supplies to gather, our mornings often felt like a race against the clock. On this particular Monday, we made the usual mad dash to the car and arrived just in time. I dropped my things on my desk while the children hurried off to take care of theirs, and soon we all gathered in the fellowship hall for the morning devotion.
Of all mornings, the speaker’s message that day was about being prepared. He spoke about the “mad rush” that happens when we begin the day unprepared and how much smoother life feels when everything is carefully laid out the night before — clothes ready, plans made, and the morning entered calmly instead of hurriedly. He talked about how preparation allows us to step into the day with peace rather than pressure.
As he spoke, I remember quietly trying to slip my keys into the pocket of my dress. But I couldn’t find the pockets. I tried again, still searching, growing more confused by the moment. That’s when I realized something was terribly wrong. In all the hurry of the morning, I had not only put my dress on backwards — it was also inside out. Of all the mornings to hear a message on being prepared. Life has a funny way of teaching its students.
The truth is, most of us do not begin our days perfectly prepared. Life rarely allows for that. Some mornings run smoothly, while others leave us doing the best we can just to arrive on time. Between our best intentions and the reality of daily life, we learn that preparation is not always what carries us through — sometimes, it is grace, quietly given in the moment.
In Lamentations 3:22–23, we see that God’s love prevents us from being overcome by each day. His mercies are new every morning, and He faithfully carries us through whatever comes. Scripture also reminds us in Matthew 6:34 not to worry about tomorrow, for each day has enough trouble of its own. We don’t need to bear the weight of the future before it arrives. God gives us exactly what we need today — His mercy, His strength, and His presence — to meet each moment fully, one step at a time.
In the Scriptures, we read how the Lord provided manna daily for the Israelites in the wilderness. Even when they were not prepared for tomorrow, He met their needs each day (Exodus 16:4). King David, too, relied on God for daily rest, strength, and guidance, even when his life was chaotic. In trusting the Good Shepherd, he learned to walk through each day with confidence, knowing God’s provision and loving care would carry him through (Psalm 23:1–3).
Honestly, we will always have mornings that feel upside down — when our plans are scattered, our energy is low, or our pockets aren’t where they should be. Yet God meets us exactly where we are. Strength often comes not from having everything in perfect order, but in small, sufficient portions, given just when we need them. As He provided manna for the Israelites and guided David through chaos, His mercy, grace, and presence are with us to take each step faithfully, one day at a time.
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).
