It is a good time to turn your “remember machine” on. I was talking to one of my great-grands just the other day – first she wanted to know how did you and grandaddy meet. Did he ask your mom and daddy to marry you? I told her that is enough of that chat.
Then we talked about the early school days.
As a young child, things were much different. We had to walk 3 miles to school each day. There was no air conditioning and only one big wood heater in the classroom. We never got new textbooks. Many times, there were not enough books for everyone to have one. There was always work before school.
I remember so well Monday and Friday were wash days. We had to pump those three wash tubs of water before going to school.
Then one of the grands wanted to know how many pairs of tennis shoes. I remember we wore oxford shoes. Most children had one pair at a time. Some did not have shoes. Every morning prayer was recited in the classroom.
In today’s time, kids have so much more. One great-grand said she has three new pairs of schoes to go back to school – not counting all the shoes she already has.
We live so blessed, and we have come a long way.
Now that our schools are back in, let us remember to pray daily for our bus drivers, school teachers, all school workers, all of our children, and the school system.
