Publix Torch Campaign Raises Funds for Special Olympics Athletes
Recently, Publix held its annual Torch Campaign to raise funds for the Special Olympics, a global movement dedicated to empowering athletes with intellectual disabilities. Running January 10-19 this year, the Torch campaign encourages Publix shoppers to contribute at checkout, with all proceeds going directly to support Special Olympics programs. These funds help provide training, competitions, and life-enriching opportunities for athletes across the country, fostering inclusivity, skill development, and personal growth.
Wakulla County’s athletes, partners, volunteers, and coaches were at Publix various times during the campaign greeting Publix shoppers, saying thank you, and sharing stories about Special Olympics. Every dollar raised helps fund year-round sports training and competitions for individuals with intellectual disabilities, allowing them to experience the thrill of competition, form lasting friendships, and build a sense of pride and self-esteem. Funds also support health and wellness programs, special events, and transportation needs, ensuring that all athletes have the opportunity to participate regardless of financial barriers.
Special Olympics Wakulla appreciates all contributions to our Special Olympics athletes, and are very thankful for the support of our local Publix staff. Many staff welcomed our group with open arms and encouraged them by asking about their sports, friends, and how Special Olympics has helped them.
We are very excited to host Wakulla County’s culminating events for track and field and bocce at Wakulla High School on February 13, 2025. Athletes have been training over the last few weeks and are excited to show off their skills for their friends and family. Athletes will compete against other county programs at Chiles High School on March 1, with hopes to advance to Regional and State Games later this Spring.
If you would like to donate your time as a volunteer or coach, please contact Sharon Scherbarth Simmons at 850-727-6067. You can contribute financially by supporting our upcoming Polar Plunge on February 8, 2025. Please visit SOFLPolarPlunge.org and search for our team, “Wakulla Snowlympians” to donate.
Together, we can make a difference.
