This weekend I’ve been thinking a lot about the real meaning of Memorial Day. My family has been very blessed to not have suffered any losses in combat recently, despite many members serving in the military. As far as I know, the last casualty was my great Uncle Anslem Ashcraft, who died in Europe during The Great War (World War I).
Sadly, he contracted the Spanish Influenza while there and died. My great-grandfather Ashcraft never got over it. The army shipped his son back in a coffin, and the family was never allowed to open it. The fear of unleashing the virus was great, and very grounded in reality. Grandpa Ashcraft lived another 42 years, and was never convinced his eldest child was in that coffin.
Whether by combat, accident, or disease, when a soldier, airman or sailor is lost, an entire family is affected.
Our holiday weekend is also a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those willing to give their all in defense of our liberty. Too often, our peace and prosperity is bought by the bravery and resolve of young men and women serving across the globe.
Remember them, and those loved ones left behind to grieve. Our reverent thanks and recognition go a long way to helping them heal. To every family who has lost a loved one, you have my deepest respect and appreciation.
Last week my community lost a beloved member. Ms.Thelma Watts died, after a protracted illness. If you never had an opportunity to know her, you missed a real treat. She was a part of “Old Wakulla” from way back, and her reminisces were both informative and entertaining. Thelma will be deeply missed; please keep her family in your prayers.
Congratulations to the Wakulla War Eagle Lady Softball team, for making it to the semi-finals in the State Championship! Few ever make it that far, and the ladies fought to the very end.
Congratulations to each high school graduate, and their proud families. It hardly seems possible 12 school years have passed, yet here we are. The future stands wide open and full of promise! I hope all your dreams come true.
