War Eagles beat Godby, 38-21

The Wakulla War Eagles got a big win Friday night over the district rival Godby Cougars, 38-21.
The win improved the War Eagles record to 5-2, and most importantly 2-0 in the district. The win clears the way for a showdown against Baker County on Oct. 24 for the district championship.
Which is exactly what Head Coach Scott Klees is warning his team about: Don’t overlook this week’s game against the South Walton Seahawks.
It’s a potential trap game: looking past an opponent for a big game, when you face a three-hour bus ride over to South Walton on Friday afternoon, and they are a good 6-2.
Still, the game against Godby was the War Eagles best overall performance this year, said Klees. “By no means a perfect game,” he said, “but our best game.”

GAME STATS
Receiver/safety Jayden Jean was MVP this week, scoring two touchdowns on offense, and 5 tackles and one assist on defense.
Running back Jeremiah Washington was offensive player of the week with 24 carries for 165 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week was lineman Antonio Harvey who had 5 tackles, a sack and an improbable interception for a touchdown – as the Godby quarterback was trying to escape a sack, he threw the ball and it came straight to Harvey, who took it to the end zone.
Special Team Player of the Week was new kicker Sam Bruce, who handled kick-offs, extra points and had a field goal.
Quarterback Owen Klees had two punts for 47 and 44 yards, one of which was downed at the 1 yard line and the other at the 11. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 181 yards and 4 touchdowns; and ran 11 times for 81 yards.
Jordan Barnes was hobbled by a sore ankle but still managed 6 catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.
New transfer player Lakari Murray, who played at Godby the first of the season, had an interception and a 25 yard TD catch for Wakulla.
Linebacker Derek Davis had 8 tackles, a fumble recovery, and a sack.
NEXT: SOUTH WALTON BEACH SEAHAWKS
A tough 6-2 team that has lost only to an undefeated Choctaw team and Florida High, Klees says the South Walton quarterback is very good, and can make throws to any part of the field. They’re big upfront, and special teams is skilled with onside kicks and pooches.
“This is a must-win to be able to set up next week for us,” Klees said, meaning the big showdown against Baker County at home on Oct. 24th.
Players have to be ready for a 3-hour bus ride – the second one in two weeks, as they sat on the bus to play the Fort Walton Beach Vikings. And they need to play well on defense.

Coach’s Corner
Last week: Big win and the War Eagles best overall game of the year..
Scouting: South Walton has a very good quarterback who can throw it all over the place. Huge upfront. And their special teams is skilled at onside and pooch kicks.
Key to victory: War Eagles have to play well on defense and handle the 3 hour bus ride over there.
