Nine career driven students from WHS’s journalism class took a field trip to WCTV on April 16th. They got to tour the WCTV facility and speak with many employees, all from different departments.

Some of the departments include engineering, finance, production, meteorology, and talent. They got a behind the scenes observation of Lenetra Bennett as an anchor on the 12 o’clock news.
Students learned firsthand how the news we receive is made. “The news making process is loaded but it’s interesting,” said student Emily Ruggless. Loaded is the right word. Students observed a single person controlling the script, images flashed on the screen, anchor queues and more! They were baffled at how much was in one person’s control. Following the news broadcast, Bennett did a question-and-answer session with the students. Some questions the students presented were, “How is the work- life balance in this career field?” and “How hard is it to talk (live) while listening to operators in her earpiece?”
Aislyn Hamilton said her favorite part of the tour was the control room. She says it was her favorite because, “It’s super cool to see behind the scenes and how many people create what we see every day.”
Overall, the students had a blast on their informative field trip to WCTV. Thank you to Journalism teacher, Mrs. Rodriguez, chaperone, Ms. Pope and the whole WCTV crew. We are grateful for your investment in our students and mentorship.
