An unusual fish diet: snakes

Have you ever wondered what Red drum eat?
While conducting routine dissections to collect life history and mercury data on fish in the Tampa Bay estuary, biologists discovered something highly unusual in one Red Drumโ€™s stomachโ€ฆ It had eaten not one, not two, but three snakes!
These snakes were later identified as mangrove saltmarsh snakes, a nonvenomous semi-aquatic species found throughout Florida.
While it is very unusual to find a snake in the gut contents of a fish, its discoveries like this that keep you on your toes when working in the lab.
