Wakulla High School Student Kaylie Kosec, right, took first place in the Optimist Club Essay Contest. Kaylie, a ninth grader, won $100 for her essay.
The topic for this year was “Optimism: How it connects us.” Colt Smith from Riversprings Middle School won second place and received $75. The rest of the winners were all from Riversprings Middle. Receiving the third place award with $50 was Alexa Weaver Ella Zak took fourth place in the contest and received $25. The judges awarded three Honorable Mention prizes fror $10 to Jacob Perry, Adrian Blas and Katrina Perry.
The most important aspect for scoring the essays was how well the student focused on the topic and emphasized connectivity. The first place winner of the contest qualifies for the next level of competition. Kaylie Kosec’s essay will be entered in the North Florida District Competition in April.
The Optimist Club thanks all the students who participated and especially their teachers who made it possible for them to compete.
The Coastal Optimist Club’s motto is “Friend of Youth” and the club promotes competitions that reward students for academic achievement.
Besides the Essay Contest, students who like to give speeches can also enter the Oratorical contest. The theme is “How to Change the World with Optimism.”
