Wakulla High School’s library proudly hosted a Q & A-style Author Visit with graphic novelist Tyrell Waiters on January 25, as part of the school’s observance of Celebrate Literacy Week.

The event provided an exciting opportunity for students to engage with an accomplished author and delve into the world of graphic illustration.
Tyrell Waiters, an accomplished illustrator, resides and works in the Northeast. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2013. Over the years, he has made a mark in various industries, including marketing, apparel, music, and entertainment.
The event primarily centered around Waiters’ debut graphic novel, Vern, Custodian of the Universe, an imaginative and comical journey through time and space. This captivating work delves deep into the essence of humanity within a world filled with uncertainty.
Vern, the protagonist of the novel, finds himself on the precipice of burnout and decides to start anew by returning to his family in the Sunshine State. Taking up a seemingly ordinary custodial job at Quasar, a local science facility with hidden motives, Vern discovers that his responsibilities extend far beyond cleaning. From black holes to space-time anomalies and even galactic ooze, Vern’s role as a custodian takes on a whole new meaning.
As Vern dabbles with a mysterious machine and unintentionally places himself on the verge of universal destruction, he is faced with the fundamental question of existence. “What is the point?” echoes throughout the narrative, exploring the depths of human purpose.
The event was moderated by Wakulla High School’s Media Specialist, Victoria Pope. Pope adeptly fielded questions from students, delving into Waiters’ past experiences, current projects, and future endeavors in the literary world.
The students at Wakulla High School thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to engage with a published author, gain insights into the creative process, and witness the vibrant world of graphic novels come to life. Excitement is mounting for the upcoming author’s visit in March, when the school will welcome local author Zelle Andrews.
We would like to extend our gratitude for Mr. Waiters for generously sharing his time and talent with our War Eagles!
