Freezing in this weather?

By SLIM RANDLES

โ€œMavis, dear, is that coffee HOT this morning?โ€
โ€œSure is, Windy.โ€
โ€œWell then, slaver a bunch of it in a cup and flop it down here in front of a freezinโ€™ guy, would you? Thanks, Hon.โ€
โ€œFreezing, Windy?โ€
โ€œAinโ€™t the first time, Doc, but they never seem any easier as I get older.โ€
โ€œYou want to come in for a checkup later?โ€

โ€œNaw, just need to get warm, you know. Used to it at my age.โ€
Steve set his cup down and looked at his old pard, Windy Wilson, camp cook and mule packer extraordinaire. โ€œDonโ€™t know how you can get cold on a summer morning like this.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s the air tempa-choor, Steve. You recomlect that time you โ€˜n me was up in the high country and got caught in a snowstorm โ€ฆโ€
โ€œAnd our slickers and jackets were back in camp? Sure I remember that. I thought about how to get that horse into my bedroll that night, โ€˜cuz he was cold, too.โ€
โ€œAnd you โ€˜member how good that Dutch oven cobbler tasted once we got the circle-lationaries goinโ€™ again?โ€
โ€œYou betcha, Windy.โ€
โ€œOkay โ€ฆ okay โ€ฆ Iโ€™ll do it,โ€ mumbled Doc. โ€œSomebody has to. Windy, weโ€™ve known each other a long time, right?โ€
โ€œSure have.โ€
โ€œAnd do you really think a temperature of 90 degrees outside will make a guy cold? Cause itโ€™s going to be 90 later on. Even the fish in Lewis Creek are sweating.โ€
โ€œNo Doc. I donโ€™t look at it that way. Sure, itโ€™s already hot and itโ€™s a-gonna get hotter, you bet. But thatโ€™s where friends come in.โ€
We all turned to stare at Windy.
โ€œSee, a friend is a guy who tells you itโ€™s the opporsit soโ€™s you can start your day cooled off a bit. You know โ€ฆ think SNOW!โ€
