The school board approves, 3-2, raising cost of renting school facilities

At a school board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 16, a new policy on the use of facilities was approved that sees a steep rise in the cost of renting school facilities.
Superintendent of Schools Bobby Pearce said the policy was prompted by concerns that some individuals were using school facilities to run a business.
The school board voted 3-2 to approve the change: Chair Cale Langston, and school board members Josh Brown and Melisa Taylor voted for; Eddie Hand and Laura Lawhon voted against.

A number of potential candidates are filing to run for local elected office in 2024.
Constitutional officers, three county commission seats, and two school board seats are on the ballot this year.
Kendyl Byrd is district spelling bee champion

The winning word was “avens.” As in “plants of a genus of perrenial herbs with pinnate or hyrate leaves and flowers with long plumose persistent styles.”
And Kendyl Byrd, a 5th grader at Shadeville, won the district spelling bee by spelling it correctly.
Tree protection eyed
County commission will look at ‘incentives’ for developers to stop clear cutting

County commissioners said they would consider tree protection ordinance after half a dozen members of the Charter Review Committee appeared at last week’s meeting to implore them to look at the issue.
