Wakulla High School hosted two scholarship signing ceremonies on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the high school.
Stand-outs Auvion Thomas and Wyatt Brown signed with college universities based on stellar athleticism and academics. Both athletes were supported by coaching staff, educational staff, family, and friends present at the event.

Wakulla County is preparing to honor 183 years of rich history, community spirit, and hometown pride at this year’s Wakulla Wonderful celebration, scheduled for Saturday, March 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UF/IFAS Wakulla Extension facility at 84 Cedar Avenue. The free, family friendly event – hosted annually by Wakulla 4 H – has grown from a modest youth service project into one of the county’s most beloved community gatherings.

Most lawmakers got a somewhat unexpected weekend off as the House and Senate didn’t begin the budget conference phase at the conclusion of the regular session’s seventh of nine scheduled weeks.
With talks growing that extra time will be needed on a property tax cut amendment to put before voters, a top priority of Gov. Ron DeSantis, the chambers did release tax cut packages this week. And while the size of the cuts isn’t as large as in prior years, there are still significant differences between the chambers that could complicate budget talks.

On Saturday, Feb. 21, thousands gathered at Woolley Park in Panacea for the first-ever Mudbugs & Music on the Bay Crawfish Cook-Off, hosted by Keep Wakulla County Beautiful (KWCB).
With more than 60 vendors, 15 cook-off competitors, and five distinguished judges, the Mardi Gras-themed waterfront event exceeded expectations and marked a major milestone for Wakulla County.
Christian Coalition expresses disappointment with school board

The Wakulla County School Board followed the recommendation of Superintendent of Schools Rick Myhre and offered the county commission the opportunity to take the old Shadeville School property.
The school was most recently known as Wakulla Education Center, or WEC, where Pre-K classes were held.

Social media was burning up over a proposed subdivision off Jack Crum Road that was up for approval at Tuesday night’s county commission meeting. As Chair Ralph Thomas noted, people online were portraying the zoning change as “a massive subdivision,” he said. “It’s not.”

Gala held
The Wakulla County Christian Coalition held its annual Arthur Andrews Scholarship Gala on Friday night, the traditional kickoff to a weekend of Black History activities. (Sgt. Andrews was a Wakulla veteran of the Vietnam War who was killed there.) Friday night’s gala honored clergy – from above left, Jocelyn Hayes accepted recognition on behalf of her father, Samuel Hayes, who was in the hospital and unable to attend; Elder Patrick White, center, and Damon Rich, with his wife Tamika, who was mistress of ceremonies for the gala. Damon Rich was also the keynote speaker for the night and spoke about identity, and who we are and who am I becoming? ‘Let God rename you,’ he said. And urged the audience to take time to slow down and listen. All these questions, he said, were the second most important questions to ask oneself.
