In an effort to make meetings more accessible to the public, county commissioners voted 4-1 to change the time of their regular meetings to 6 p.m.
The change will take effect at the commission meeting on Nov. 3.
County recycling program ends

As part of the negotations for an extended contract with Waste Pro for garbage service to county residents, the curbside recycling program will end this week.
Waste Pro reported that fewer than 20% of county residents took advantage of the service.

The Wakulla County School Board unanimously approved a proclamation last week designating Oct. 14 as โCharlie Kirk Day of Peaceful Civic Discourseโ in Wakulla County Schools.
The proclamation, approved at the Sept. 15 school board meeting wasrecommended by Superintendent Richard Myhre.
Kirk, the conservative speaker, was assassinated on Sept. 10.

Unity in the Community holds its annual luncheon at the Community Center beginning at noon to honor those contributing to Wakulla.
The Festival of Joy is at Wakulla Springs Lodge from 1 to 4 p.m., celebrating special needs kids with a party.
And the Rotary Club of Wakullaโs Boots & Bingo will be held at 3Y Ranch beginning at 6 p.m. The event is Rotaryโs big fundraiser of the year for the clubโs community projects.
Superintendentโs statement on first day of school

The Wakulla Sun had reached out last week to Superintendent of Schools Rick Myhre for comment about the first day of school, but he was out of the office for health reasons.
The day after our deadline, Myhre submitted a statement through the district office:
โThe first day of school is always one of my favorite times of the year. Thereโs an energy and excitement that comes with welcoming our students back into classrooms โ from our youngest Pre-K learners to our graduating seniors.

Two Wakulla Sun staffers have recently published books or received awards:
- โSea the Music by the Bay,โ by Sun photographer Gerald Brown, along with co-author Herb Donaldson, is about local musicians after Hurricane Michael. He will have a book signing at Palaver Tree on Friday, Aug. 22, from 5 to 8 p.m.
- Sun religion columnist Sheryl Boldt finished third in the nationwide ACFW Kingdom KidLit Contest for her childrenโs book, โZackโs Surprisingly Great Kind of a Dayโ in the category of Unpublished Picture Books, the largest category entered this year.
