Maxie Lawhon, who served as a county commissioner for 12 years representing the Sopchoppy area, died on Wednesday, March 12. He was 70 years old.
Lawhon served on the Wakulla Board of County Commissioners during a tumultous time in the county – commission meetings were fraught with the politics of pro-growth vs. “smart” growth, or Old Wakulla vs. new residents. At times, the board was split 3-2 and meetings would sometimes go past midnight.

St. Marks City Hall has black mold, according to City Manager Katherine Gatewood.
For the foreseeable future, city commission meetings will be held at the St. Marks Yacht Club, Gatewood said. (The city commission meeting set for Thursday, March 13 has been cancelled.)
She is ordering a mobile office – a jobsite trailer – that is expected to be delivered in abou 10 days.

The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office and Wakulla Animal Control were involved in two different incidents last week in which a number of dogs were seized.
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the sheriff’s office was alerted to possible abuse of dogs at a home on Walden Way, off Ace High Stables in a TikTok video also posted to Facebook.

Hertz was convicted in 1999 of the home invasion murders of Keith Spears and Melanie King back in 1997.
