Radio Field Day 2026 set for June 27

The American Radio Relay League’s first Field Day was held in June 1933. Since that time, amateurs gather every year to practice this emergency preparedness exercise. Yearly, except during the WW2 period when the government did not allow amateur radio transmissions on the air, hams come together in fields, parks, public places and, more recently, EOCs, Red Cross facilities, and other emergency locations to operate simulated emergencies, to prepare for when regular commercial power and communications become unavailable.

“I wasn’t the fastest kid on the block,” said Sam Harris Sr. “So when I started getting these phone calls and talking with Coach Kam, he was like, ‘Mr. Harris, your son is pretty fast.’ I’m like OK, cool. He said, ‘I don’t think you get it, he’s really fast.’ I said, OK, well let’s see. From there it took off.”

The 6th Annual Gage Pitman Memorial Rockin’ Reds Fishing Tournament takes place this weekend, June 12–1,4 at Woolley Park in Panacea.
This annual event honors the life and legacy of Gage Pitman by celebrating his passion for fishing and bringing the community together for a weekend of competitive angling, live music, great food, and a raffle featuring a guitar signed by the Red Clay Strays, along with waterfront fun.
