These Shadeville Elementary students head inside on the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 10, which was an early release day. Superintendent of Schools Rick Myhre issued a statement giving “a huge shout-out and thank you to our bus drivers and van drivers for an amazing first day of school!” Myhre noted that some bus routes were a little longer, and some buses were more crowded than others, but no bus left campus over capacity and all students arrived home safely.
The FRESH Be A Hero to Our Heroes organization held its 16th annual Backpack Giveaway at communities around the county – St. Marks, Panacea, Sopchoppy – culminating in the big event at this past Saturday at the community center in Crawfordville. Students received school supplies to prepare for the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 10.

We had a couple of good crowds on hand for the recent candidate forums.
Republican candidates for county commission Quincee Messersmith and Carrie Hughes shared their views at the library on July 28. There were about 40 people there.
And last week we hosted the Republican and Democrat candidates for Congress, seeking the district 2 seat currently held by retiring U.S. Rep. Neal Dunn. About 60 people turned out for that one.

Republican candidates for county commissioner district 4 appeared at a forum hosted by The Wakulla Sun last week.
Incumbent Quincee Messersmith and challenger Carrie Hughes shared their views at the event held Tuesday, July 28 at the public library.
Candidates were given 3 minutes to answer questions, but their answers were so brief that not once did either reach the limit and the forum was done after 35 minutes.

Wakulla Classroom Teachers Association president Cassandra Johnson was effusive in her praise of the superintendent and school board in salary negotiations for this year: the offer was an increase for teacher salaries from monies from the Legislature with a match from the district, plus increase in supplements.
