Judge expresses frustration with lack of resolution in Mike Kempโs case

Becky Whaleyโs attorney announced in felony court last week that she had signed a deferred prosecution agreement with the state and paid $500 to resolve her case.
The commander of road patrol deputies at the Wakulla County Sheriffโs Office, Major Dale Evans, was reportedly suspended and placed on paid administrative leave on Thursday pending an internal affairs investigation. Evans, who had approached the Sun with concerns about a hostile workplace environment at the sheriffโs office and those concerns were published in a story in last weekโs newspaper, was suspended on Thursday, Aug. 14, over an additional series of memos he filed at the sheriffโs office complaining about Colonel Herman โChuckโ Whaley, who oversees the Criminal Investigations Division.

Klees: Team is looking for guys to step up

Last yearโs Wakulla War Eagle team were a young bunch, says Head Coach Scott Klees. This year, he says, heโs expecting those guys to grow up and be the teamโs leaders. Those players include Owen Klees at quarterback, son of the coach, a senior this year and coming off being named FCAโs Player of the Year last year. He is also the punter, and expected to play defense as a safety in certain packages. Heath Milligan will also get some playing time as quarterback as well.
A deputy in the Wakulla County Sheriffโs Office, part of the command staff, is claiming Sheriff Jared Miller fosters a hostile workplace environment. Major Dale Evans, a longtime sheriffโs deputy who is over the officeโs road patrol unit, filed a complaint against Sheriff Miller a couple of years ago โ that was resolved, but he has filed new complaints about the office.
Runners object to the closing of the Paul Hoover Track to the public

A number of local runners attended last weekโs school board meeting to object to the Paul Hoover Track at Wakulla High School being closed to the public. The speakers included Stan Linton, former Wakulla runner under Track Coach Paul Hoover who went on to run at FSU and later made it to Olympic trials.

After a one-day trial last week for a charge of trafficking in methamphetamine, a six-person jury returned a not guilty verdict against Brian Taff. The trial was held on Tuesday, July 22, with Wakulla Circuit Judge Layne Smith presiding.

Looking at continuing 7.9 mill property tax levy and possibility of increasing Public Service Tax
County commissioners passed a proclamation praising Kevin Carter of Attack One Fire Management Services for earning the designation as the Small Business Administrationโs State Rural Small Business Owner of the Year.

Wakulla County Commissioners discussed the possibility of lowering property taxes this year, but seemed to acknowledge it would be unlikely as they face annual maintenance costs for the new radio system upwards of $500,000 a year.
Stuart Mauney, the man found guilty in May of murdering a hunter on the Purify Bay Road portion of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge land in December 2021, was sentenced to life in prison by Wakulla Circuit Judge Layne Smith at a hearing on Thursday, July 10.
