Stuart Mauney, the man found guilty in May of murdering a hunter on the Purify Bay Road portion of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge land in December 2021, was sentenced to life in prison by Wakulla Circuit Judge Layne Smith at a hearing on Thursday, July 10.

There was a big crowd on hand at the community center on Friday night for Keep Wakulla County Beautiful’s award dinner.
Incoming KWCB president Steve Cushman presented his idea of “Just Imagine” – a new focus for the group away from Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to a reduction of waste. “Just stop,” he said. He bemoaned the consumer culture of “Buy now” that produces enormous waste.

Wakulla Circuit Judge Layne Smith dismissed a case last week in which the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office had seized and was seeking to have forfeited a cryptocurrency account that had received money from a financial scam of a Wakulla woman as the judge found the account was in Miami, and the account had never been located in Wakulla.

Wakulla County property values increased some 9.54% over last year, according to Property Appraiser Donnie Sparkman
Sparkman released the preliminary numbers in a memo to county commissioners dated June 1.
The total estimated value of Wakulla property as of June 1 is $2.50 billion, an increase over last year’s $2.28 billion – an increase in value of more than $220 million over the year.

It was a huge announcement for Wakulla County: Point Blank Enterprises, a manufacturer of tactical gear for law enforcement and the military, is opening a new facility in Opportunity Park.
The company promises 300 jobs with an average salary of $52,900 plus more than $8,000 in benefits.
Memorial Day was observed with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony on the courthouse grounds on Monday, May 26. A crowd of about 75 attended the event.

Stuart Mauney, who was charged with killing a man in the Purify Bay Road area back in December 2021, was found guilty of second degree murder after a two-day trial last week.
It took the six-person jury only 20 minutes to deliberate and return the guilty verdict.

Jury selection is expected to get underway in the murder trial of Suart Mauney, who is charged with killing a man in the Purify Bay Road area back in December 2021. He was arrested and charged in February 2022 after investigation by the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office.
