Weekly Roundup: Bills on the move

TALLAHASSEE — Florida legislators completed the second of nine scheduled weeks of the 2025 regular session, with the Senate pushing its first measure across the finish line.
Senators on Wednesday unanimously passed a proposal (SB 112) to expand services for children with autism. The bill, with a nearly $756,000 price tag, is intended to improve early intervention, school readiness, educational opportunities and workforce training for students with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities.

Jason Looney gets two life sentences
He was convicted in the 1997 Spears-King murders, but will no longer face the death penalty

Jason Looney, one of three men responsible for the 1997 home invasion murders of Keith Spears and Melanie King, was sentenced last week to two consecutive life sentences by Wakulla Circuit Judge Layne Smith.

St. Marks City Hall has black mold, according to City Manager Katherine Gatewood.
For the foreseeable future, city commission meetings will be held at the St. Marks Yacht Club, Gatewood said. (The city commission meeting set for Thursday, March 13 has been cancelled.)
She is ordering a mobile office – a jobsite trailer – that is expected to be delivered in abou 10 days.
Triumph approves $15M for to attract two businesses

The Triumph Gulf Coast Board met in Destin two weeks ago and approved more than $15 million to support Wakulla’s effort to attract two large businesses to the county.

The annual Lions Club St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival is Saturday, March 15.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. and travels down U.S. Highway 319.
After the parade, there will be arts and crafts vendors, food and entertainment at Hudson Park until 2 p.m.
